Vijay Vaidyanath Temple – Ambika Kalna

Tucked away behind the imposing Krishna Chandra Temple within the Rajbari temple complex in Ambika Kalna, the east-facing Vijay Vaidyanath Temple might easily escape the notice of visitors, overshadowed by its larger neighbor.

This temple follows the traditional Atchala style, elevated on a platform, and is devoted to Lord Shiva, locally known as Bijoy Baidyanath. At some point in its history, the temple was adorned with a multitude of terracotta tiles, although now, only remnants remain on the front facade.

The lower sections of the facade feature expansive panels portraying scenes with European soldiers—marching, hunting, in procession, or aboard a ship. Delicate floral and geometric designs, albeit diminishing due to erosion, also grace the temple’s exterior.

According to local lore, the construction of this temple was initiated by Maharaja Tilok Chandra’s mother. She had fervently prayed to Lord Shiva for a son and, upon the fulfillment of her wish, instructed her son to build this temple once he ascended to the position of Raja. While the exact date of construction is not confirmed by a foundation plaque, the legend suggests a probable date around 1746 CE.
