Kampot is a compact town situated on the north bank of the Teuk Chhou River. Once a bustling trading port, it has a lovely riverfront lined with trees with plenty of colonial houses.

There’s no specific sights to see in Kampot, it more a place to relax, perhaps taking a boat up the river to see rural Cambodian life.

The region around Kampot is known for its famous black pepper, which is widely available in Cambodia and is also exported throughout the world. There’s also salt mines set alongside endless paddy fields with villagers harvesting the crop.

A short excursion from Kampot is Phnom Sorseha, a small Buddhist temple set on a hill with some interesting caves to explore.

Kep is also a worthwhile excursion to make. Once an affluent seaside resort back in the 1960s, it became overshadowed by the more developed town of Sihanoukville, but seems to be making a bit of a comeback. There’s no sandy beaches here, it’s all pebbles, but Kep is definitely worth visiting if you like your seafood. It’s a great place to have a relaxing lunch.
