Khajuraho – Javari Temple

KSP_5340

Dedicated to Vishnu, the Javari Temple is part of the eastern group and is situated 200m south of the Vamana Temple, surrounded by fields, trees and grazing cattle.

The name ‘Javari’ given to this shrine is a local variation that derives from the word ‘javara’, meaning ‘millet’, which is grown in the surrounding fields.

Javari is a small but well proportioned temple, consisting of a sanctum, vestibule mandapa and portico, and a wonderful soaring sikhara. There is no ambulatory.

There are three bands of ornate carvings on the exterior, but the highlight of this temple has to be the ornate makara-torana (gateway) that greets any visitor approaching the interior.

Housed within the tiny sanctum is the now headless image of Vishnu.

Architecturally there are many similarities between the Javari and Chaturbhuj temples, which broadly gives us a construction date of 1075 – 1100 A.D.

As always, remember to look up when exploring these wonderful temples ! 🙂
