Murali Mohan Temple – Bishnupur

Located on the northern outskirts of the temple town of Bishnupur, the Murali Mohan Temple was constructed in 1665 CE by Queen Shiromani (alias Churamani Devi), wife of the Malla King Bir Singha II. She is also attributed to the building of the Madan Gopal temple in the west of the town in exactly the same year.

The south-facing temple measures just over 10m square in plan and reaches a height of 12.2m. Architecturally this temple has many similarities with the Kalachand temple of Bishnupur, probably the earliest Ekaratna temple in the town and built nine years earlier. The main difference is the three arched openings being replaced by a covered ambulatory passage resting on a row of pillars.

There are no terracotta panels adorning the temple, and much of the stucco plaster that originally covered this temple has weathered away, revealing the underlying coarse laterite masonry.
