Gosagaresvara Temple – Bhubaneswar

Gosagaresvara Temple and tank is situated 350m north of Vaital (Baitala) Deula Temple in old Bhubaneswar. This is one of the few temples I unfortunately only looked at from a distance.

According to local legend, Lord Shiva inadvertently killed a calf near this spot and bathed in Gosagaresvara Tank before worshiping Lord Gosagaresvara. Both these acts cleansed Lord Shiva of the sin of killing the calf.

In keeping with this tradition, even today locals suffering from the sin of killing cows take a ritual bath in the tank and likewise worship Gosagaresvara in order to cleanse their own sin.

The temple standing today was built sometime between the 14th and 15th century.
