Nagesvara (Nabakeswar) Temple – Bhubaneswar

Located 300m north of Parsurameswara Temple in Bhubaneswar old city, Nagesvara (Nageswar) Temple is set within a small manicured garden next to an ancient tank. This monument also goes by the name of Nabakeswar Temple, it is often referred to as much in the media.

Thought to have been built sometime in the 10th century A.D. by the Somavamshi dynasty kings, the temple is plain without any decoration or designs

The temple has a rekh vimana with no connecting mandapa (jagamohana). The presiding deity within the sanctum is a shiva linga.

Nagesvara Temple faces west, with the exterior niches containing images of Ganesha, Kartikeya and Parvati.

A few meters north of the main temple is a small subsidiary shrine, stuffed full of idols and offerings, something which thus far I hadn’t encountered to this level at other temples.

There seems to be little additional information regarding this temple in books or on the internet, so this blog is really for completeness as I strive to document as many of the ancient temples in Bhubaneswar as I can 🙂
