Appar Chola – 10th Century – South India
This is the image of saint Appar, who was popular in South Indian Shaivism. The image is identifiable on the basis of the staff that he holds, and his ascetic-like garment. He is standing with joined hands (anjali-mudra), wearing necklaces and arm bands. The pedestal that he stands on is symbolic of the double lotus, which signifies purity.
