Fragment of umbrella with Pali inscription from the Kushana period – 2nd Cent A.D.
Consisting of four lines, it refers to the four noble truths of the Buddhist doctrine, as outlined in Buddha’s first sermon at Sarnath. The four noble truths (Chatvari Aryastyani) are; 1 – Sorrow, 2 – Cause of sorrow, 3 – Cessation of sorrow, 4 – The way.
